Pregnancy is a time to begin to become aware of everything in your environment. You begin to pay more attention to what you eat and how often you exercise. You tune in to your relationship with your partner as well as your relationship with your body. How you observe the world will influence your pregnancy and your baby’s health. This chapter is not written to make you feel guilty, but instead to empower you with the knowledge that you can make positive change in your life. It is how you feel about what is happening in your life that affects your pregnancy and the development of your baby, not what happens to you.

This segment is devoted to changing your mind. Changing your mind so that you observe your environment, instead of react to your environment, is one key to a happy, healthy pregnancy. In fact, research shows that a mother’s brain is actually changing, creating new connections that allow her to “sense” her environment in new ways. As you begin to become more mindful of your world and create conscious agreement in everything in your life, your baby receives all of the benefits. You will begin to place your focus and your attention on those things that please you, that you are grateful for, and that make you feel fully alive and loved.

Your body is a direct reflection of how you observe the world. If you constantly perceive your world as a threat, your body reacts with stress hormones and creates dis-ease. If you see the world as harmonious, your body is also in a state of harmony. During pregnancy, your world-view is being sent as molecular messages to your baby. This affects your baby’s development and your baby’s emotional health or EQ (emotional quotient). You have tremendous power and opportunity during your pregnancy to change your life and the life of your baby. When gratitude, peace, and joy are rooted in your state of being, your baby will grow in a state of optimal health.

Your baby becomes who you ARE during pregnancy. Observing all aspects of who you are and who you want to become are the foundational keys to the motherbaby bond during the first trimester. This section of the book includes a look at how you observe the world and how you think about your environment—from stress, to routine medical tests in pregnancy, to common physical discomforts, to the food you eat, to the people and support systems around you.
